Current Public Art Opportunities


RFQ New York City DOT Transit Sites - Deadline: Feb. 22, 2010
The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Percent for Art Program in conjunction with the Department of Design and Construction (DDC) and Department of Transportation (DOT) invitesartists to submit qualifications and letters of interest to be considered for panel review and the opportunity to be considered as finalists for the commission of permanent artwork for DOT plaza sites throughout the city. New Government Facilities Norfolk, VA - Deadline: Feb. 25, 2010
The Norfolk Public Art Commission seeks to commission an artist to design a commemoration that will tell the story and educate viewers of the history and importance of the End of the Massive Resistance. The committee is not looking for specific representation but hopes the work will communicate a depth of feeling, meaning and human understanding of this time and history. The final artwork should communicate the past and what was, be thought-provoking and challenging but also look to the future with inspiration and communicate our hopes as a community and a higher ideal. The selected artist will be work closely with the community to understand the history of this significant event, the changing race relations and what it means to Norfolk.

Project Funds: Up to five finalists will be selected to be interviewed by the public art planning committee and paid $1,000 to make a presentation to the committee. This includes all travel, preparation and interview. One artist will be selected for the project. An additional $32,000 is available for the final complete design phase. The budget for the completed and installed artwork is $500,000 at this time, however significant private sector fundraising is anticipated.

RFQ Millcreek Community Center - Salt Lake City, Utah - Deadline: Feb. 26 
Letters of interest and qualifications are requested from artists both regional and national working in a variety of media who are interested in participating in an open competition for works of public art for the new Millcreek Community Center located in a well established neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah. Up to $130,000.00 has been designated for art obtained through this process. The project presents an opportunity for a diverse and exciting range of public artworks ranging from exterior treatments including pavers and interior wall and/or floor treatments and mobiles. The Millcreek Community Center has many functions and houses a Recreation Center, Senior Center and Library, all accessible through the centers main lobby/atrium. Jersey Barrier Design RFP - Deadline: March 1, 2010
The New York City Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Community Affairs Unit and New York Cares, is launching an initiative to improve the appearance of Jersey Barriers at selected sites around the City. NYCDOT is soliciting artists to propose designs to be painted directly onto a number of barriers with support from NY Cares volunteers over a single weekend in spring 2010. Bingham Entrepreneurship & Energy Research Center, USU: April 1
Letters of interest and qualifications are requested from artists interested in creating site specific art for the traffic circle "gateway" of the public access road to the new Bingham Entrepreneurship and Energy Research Center (BEERC) on the regional campus of Utah State University in Vernal. At present the site is rural, however, this traffic circle “gateway” is the entry point for what will become a major campus with high volume of community and student traffic. As possible sources of inspiration and context, the committee will invite finalist artists to consider the purpose of this facility, its contributions to the community, the architecture, the community of Unitah basin and the City of Vernal, and/or the geology of the area. Charlotte, NC – Deadline: open  
Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is seeking professional artists for design collaborations and/ or public art commissions for its Art-in Transit Program. Over the next few years, Charlotte is building a rapid transit system and will incorporate public art into its stations, park and rides, and maintenance facilities and has allocated $2.3 million for art. Design fees range from $5,000-$25,000: commissions rom $25,000-$250,000. In preparation for Phase I and subsequent phases, artists are requested to submit their materials to a new slide registry that will be used to make selections of artists as the system is phased in.
